Looking for a great Summer jam? Look no further than sisters Melissa and Jessica Labbadia of L2.
We chatted with the girls all about their song “Insomnia,” style and their songwriting style.
What inspired your song “Insomnia”? We co-wrote “Insomnia” with Luke Walker of Pulse Recording in LA. We started working on the track which sounded very dream-like and entrancing and that sparked the concept of “Insomnia.” Lyrically we were inspired by our real life experiences with relationships. The song is basically about loving someone so much that you can’t sleep, eat, or think because you’re so consumed in the thought of this person. We’re also very familiar with the topic of insomnia, we both actually have trouble sleeping so we thought it would be cool to play upon that theme.
The music video looks like it was a lot of fun to shoot. What was your favorite part? The whole Music Video was so fun to shoot! It was our first time shooting a video in LA, which was a really great experience. We shot it in a soundstage and we got to work with an incredible team! Our favorite part was the scene we shot together back to back with fog and colored lights. We have the most fun when we are shooting together and visually we love those shots! We also love our solo shots on the gold throne. The chair was just sitting around the soundstage and when the director saw it he thought it would be perfect!
You girls have such great style in the video. How would you describe your style? Thank you! We describe our style as Glam Rock. The fun of Katy Perry combined with the edginess of Rihanna. We love sequins, leather, and fringe. We have an amazing stylist and Creative Director, Barbara, who helps us with our signature style and image.
Your songs have been used in a lot of TV shows. Do you remember the first time you heard your song on one? It’s so amazing to have our songs featured on TV shows such as Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Khloe & Lamar, Kourtney & Kim Take New York, and Real World to name a few. The first time we heard our song was on the Kardashians and it was our song “Goodbye To You.” It was so crazy because we didn’t even know it was going to be on, we were just watching the show and were like “hey! that’s our song!.” It was also awesome to have our song “Beautiful” featured during the slideshow on Kendall’s Sweet 16 Special. We feel so blessed and thankful to have these opportunities.
What’s coming up next with your music? We have a lot of exciting things in the works right now! We’ve been concentrating on writing and recording new material at the moment. We’ve been working in the studio with Luke Walker on some killer new songs! We can’t wait to release them. We also just put out a new summer song called “Limitless” which is now available for free download on our Website (www.L2OfficialMusic.com) and our Facebook Page (www.Facebook.com/L2OfficialMusic). It’s one of our favorite songs we’ve worked on, it’s really upbeat and fun. Go check it out!
Who are your biggest influences? Our biggest influences are Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga. We are also inspired by 80′s artists such as Pat Benatar, Heart, and Joan Jett.
Where is the weirdest place you’ve ever been inspired to write a song, or written a song? We usually sit down and reflect on our life experiences which then sparks our creativity. We also get inspiration in places such as the car, the subway, and walking on the streets of NYC. The weirdest place we’ve ever written a song is probably the outside terrace of a hotel. We wanted to get some inspiration from the ocean, so we sat outside with an acoustic guitar and journal and wrote our song “Beautiful”. We’re sure the people at the bar thought we were crazy!
For someone who has never heard your music before, how would you describe it? We like to describe our music as Pop/Dance with an edge. It’s the Pop of Katy Perry meets the vocals of Kelly Clarkson meets the Dance and edge of Rihanna. We also like to fuse 80′s influences into our music. One of the main focuses of L2 is our tight knit harmonies. As sisters our voices blend extremely well together. What’s different about us is that there is two lead singers, not just one. Vocally, we both have something different and unique to bring to the table. Jessica has the lower brassy tone and Melissa has the higher soprano tone, and when we come together in harmony it sounds as if it is one voice.
Is there a song that you’ve written that you’re most proud of? We’re extremely proud of all of our songs because each song has a special meaning to us and they’re all based on life experiences. The two songs that we’re most proud of are “Insomnia” and “Boys Or Girls” since they both reached the TOP 20 on the Billboard Dance/Club Charts, “Boys Or Girls” reaching #10 and “Insomnia” reaching #16. It was an amazing accomplishment to be on the Charts with incredible artists that we admire such as Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Madonna, and Kelly Clarkson.
Do you have any message for your fans? We always encourage our fans to follow their dreams and never give up! Do what you love and follow your heart. The sky is the limit!
