Producer Talks Breaking Dawn Movie(s)

twilight-eclipse-robert-pattinson-kristen-stewartMore details have surfaced on the behind-the-scenes decision over whether to make The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn one movie or two.  Wyck Godfrey, one of the producers of all the films, talked with the L.A. Times yesterday:

At the moment, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who’s penned all the “Twilight” movies, is working on the “Breaking Dawn” script(s). “It’s a work in process,” Godfrey said in an interview Friday. “The issue [of whether there will be one or two movies] is not going to be resolved until we get the full treatment and see whether it’s organic. If it’s not organic, I don’t think it will be done, and if it is, it will be. It really has to do with how much level of detail from the books there is, with all of these new vampires that appear in ‘Breaking Dawn,’ the whole section about Jacob… It’s a very long single movie if it does become a single movie.”

He isn’t very clear about it, but what he’s saying is that Melissa Rosenberg is, in fact, writing treatments (in-depth plot synopses) for two Breaking Dawn movies.  Once she’s finished, the studio and Stephenie Meyer will look them over to see if they work as two separate stories.

Combine this with the earlier story about how Stephenie Meyer might be worried Breaking Dawn won’t work as two movies, and what it sounds like is that Summit commissioned Rosenberg to write two treatments first in order to assure Meyer it would work.  Which is fine.  The sooner everybody gets on the same page, the sooner Breaking Dawn starts filming.

New Moon Box Office Update

11. January 2010

twilight-saga-new-moon-volturi-posterWe haven’t talked about how The Twilight Saga: New Moon is doing in theaters lately, but it’s still there, in over a thousand nationwide, still plugging along thanks to repeat business from fans.

Like most other films, it saw bump over the long holiday break.  The weekend before Christmas it made $4.4 million, then dropped to $3 million on Christmas weekend only to see its grosses bounce up to $3.4 million over New Year’s weekend.

Once everybody started going back to school, business fell as expected and it made $1.7 million this past weekend.

Overall, that gives it a total gross of $290.7 million and counting – easily one of the top five movies released in ‘09.

Stephenie Meyer Stalling Breaking Dawn?

11. January 2010

edward-bella-running-new-moonSo there’s still no director for Breaking Dawn — although rumor has it Summit Entertainment wants Chris Weitz to come back — and there’s no word on when it might film.  According to E! Online, the reason for the delay might be that Stephenie Meyer can’t decide whether or not to let Summit break it up into two films.

“Stephenie is calling the shots,” our mole tells us, “and she still can’t decide whether or not [making two movies] is the right thing to do creatively.”

Deep Twi insists that everything—including splitting Breaking Dawn into two films—is run by Meyer (after all she penned the friggin’ thing). …  “Meyer isn’t in it for the fame. She hates doing press, and she doesn’t want to be recognized for anything other than her work, so what’s her incentive to drag [the book] out?”

Of course, we’re assured she does want to please the fans, but isn’t four films enough?

Summit is doing its best to “politely inspire” Stephenie to greenlight the two-flick route. For them, double the work equals double the money.

The whole thing sounds a little fishy.  For one thing, Summit owns the rights to the series; I haven’t seen the contracts, but I don’t know whether they would even need her approval.  (Of course, going against her wishes would probably be a total PR disaster.)

But more importantly, Stephenie said a while back that Breaking Dawn is such a big book that she didn’t think one movie should do it justice.  So why would she not be sure now?

If she is worried about whether two movies is “the right thing to do creatively,” then the solution is for her, Summit, and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg to sit down and figure out exactly where the book would be broken up and how to construct two separate story arcs out of it.  Isn’t that what they should have been doing all along?

Anna Kendrick on Robert Pattinson vs. George Clooney

7. January 2010

Anna KendrickRobert PattinsonThis is really funny.  According to People, Anna Kendrick (a.k.a. Twilight’s Jessica Stanley) tells Ellen DeGeneres on the Ellen show airing tomorrow about a feud she created between her New Moon co-star Robert Pattinson and her Up in the Air co-star George Clooney.  Check it out:

Shedding light on shooting Up in the Air with George Clooney and Twilight with Robert Pattinson, Kendrick, 24, tells Ellen DeGeneres on the TV’s host’s Jan. 8 show, “George gave me such a hard time about shooting Twilight. Whenever I came back, it was like, ‘Oh sorry, this isn’t the Twilight set. You’re not working with Mr. Handsome.’ He called Rob ‘Mr. Handsome.’ ”

But Kendrick admits she helped egg on the pseudo-competition, bringing back a GQ magazine that she had Pattinson sign, “To George, Best of Luck. Hang in there. Love Rob.”

Clooney’s response? He signed his Esquire magazine, “Dear Rob, Thanks for all the inspiration. I’m a huge fan. Love, George, two-time ‘Sexiest Man Alive.’ “
